President Mary McAleese

Mary McAleeseOn 11th November, 1997, Mary McAleese was inaugurated as the eighth President of Ireland. Mary McAleese was re-elected on Friday 1st October 2004 being the only validly-nominated candidate. She is a barrister and former Professor of Law. Born on June 27th 1951 in Belfast, she is the first President to come from Northern Ireland.

She graduated in Law from the Queen's University of Belfast in 1973 and was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 1974. In 1975, she was appointed Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin and in 1987, she returned to her Alma Mater, Queen's, to become Director of the Institute of Professional Legal Studies. In 1994, she became the first female Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Queen's University of Belfast. President McAleese has a longstanding interest in many issues concerned with justice, equality, social inclusion, anti-sectarianism and reconciliation. The theme of her Presidency is 'Building Bridges'.



Thomas Bergmark, Social & Environmental Affairs Manager, IKEA Group

Thomas BergmarkThomas Bergmark is 49 years old and has a background in business management for more than 25 years. Thomas is engineer and for the last four years has been Social & Environmental Affairs Manager within the IKEA Group. He has worked with IKEA for more than 17 years in various positions from purchasing management, Managing Director for IKEA companies and Area Business Manager.

Thomas is also member of the IKEA Strategical Purchasing Committee, the Retail Board at IKEA in Switzerland and Chairman of the Sow a Seed Foundation.



Martin O’Rourke, MD, BUPA Ireland

Martin O’RourkeMartin O’Rourke has over thirty years experience in the establishment and delivery of dynamic and innovate health related services. He is qualified as a chartered certified accountant and graduate of Harvard Business School. Martin set up BUPA Ireland in 1997 and is currently the Managing Director.

Martin was the first Chairman of the International Information Technology Panel for the Federation of Voluntary Health Funds and a Deputy Governor of “Association Internationale de la Mutualité”. Martin was formerly assistant Chief Executive of the VHI where he had responsibility for Operations and Corporate Planning before setting up a consultancy practice focusing on international assignments including working on UN Staff Health Care systems in Geneva.

Martin is a strong advocate of competition and believes that supply side reform is needed for maximum consumer benefit.



Mark Little, RTÉ News and Current Affairs

Mark LittleMark Little was born in Dublin in 1968 and educated at Trinity College and Dublin City University. He joined RTÉ as a television reporter in 1991 and in September 1995 was appointed as RTÉ’s first Washington Correspondent.

Among the events he covered were two presidential elections and reported extensively on President Clinton's involvement in the Irish peace process.

Mark returned to Ireland in January 2001 to become RTÉ’s Foreign Affairs Correspondent. He reported on the impact of the September 11 attacks from a number of locations including the United States, Israel, Egypt and Iran. In 2001, he was named Television Journalist of the Year for his reporting in Afghanistan.

Mark is currently a presenter of RTÉ television’s current affairs programme Prime Time. He is the author of several books including Turn Left at Greenland (1992), Zulu Time (2004).



Eugenie Harvey – Co-founder We Are What We Do

Eugenie HarveyEugenie Harvey spent 12 years working in communications before she started working on the development of We Are What We Do with David Robinson, OBE in 2002. Most recently, she spent two years with Brunswick Group where she helped people communicate better and prior to this she worked on the Australian Tourist Commission’s public relations account in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Back in her native Australia, Eugenie held communications positions with the pay TV company, FOXTEL and with the Sydney theatre Company.

Today, Eugenie leads a team of 4 full time, 5 part time and 4 volunteers to develop We Are What We Do projects around the world.



Sean FitzPatrick - Chairman, Anglo Irish Bank plc.

Sean FitzPatrickSean FitzPatrick joined the Anglo Irish Bank in 1980 and was appointed Chief Executive in 1986. He was appointed Non-executive Chairman in 2004.

Having graduated from University College Dublin, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972.

Anglo Irish Bank, with total assets in excess of €48 billion, is Ireland’s third largest bank and fourth largest company listed on the Irish Stock Exchange. Through the consistent application of a focused strategy, the Group has been one of the best performing banks globally over the past ten years.

Sean is a non-executive Director of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Greencore plc, Aer Lingus, and a number of UK, European and Irish companies.

He is a Council Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and past President of Irish Bankers Federation.

He is also Vice Chair of Business in the Community Ireland.



Stephen Howard, Managing Director, Business in the Community

Stephen HowardStephen Howard was born and educated in the United States and began his career there after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School in 1978.

Stephen joined Business in the Community as Managing Director in 2005, bringing with him a wealth of senior management expertise acquired through the corporate sector. His two most recent appointments were as Group Chief Executive of Novar plc, a manufacturing company employing 13,500 people worldwide and Cookson Group plc, a global materials technology group with a turnover of €1.6 billion.
